History of Black Oak
Black Oak Cemetery is located in
Santa Cruz County was established on March 15, 1899.
Prior to the Gadsden Purchase the area now known as Canelo,
In 1904 area resident Robert Rodgers wrote and asked for a
A Post Office was established in CANILLE, ARIZONA on Aug. 22, 1904.
The Canille Post Office and was discontinued on April 30, 1924 and
When the Canille Post Office was in existence the Forest Service set

Canelo, (Canille) Arizona, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, on Highway 83
It is almost 14 miles from the junction of Highways 82 & 83, about
1/2 mile from mile marker 18. After you have entered into
the Coronado National Forest
Before that it was part of Pima County of the Arizona Territory.
was called the Canela Hills for the light brown color of the hills.
Canela is the Spanish word for cinnamon.
Post Office to be called Canille. The spelling was his
as he did not know how to spell the Spanish word 'canela'.
Robert Rodgers was the first Post Master from 1904 - 1906.
then his wife Annie took over from 1906 - 1910. In 1910 Addie Parker
became postmaster. All three are buried in Black Oak Cemetery
all mail for the area residents went to the Elgin, Arizona Post Office.
aside a site not to far away from the Post Office for a Ranger Station.
The site was known as CANELA. Later that name was changed
officially to CANELO.
Elgin District.
In 1920 and 1930 Census the area was listed as Canille
allotment to be used as a cemetery. Her son, James Finley,
donated money to permanently endow the cemetery. In 1962 the
roofed chapel on the grounds was built. In 1971 the cemetery was
incorporated and is now governed by a board of directors that takes
care of the the maintenance and assignment of the plots. The
cemetery is free of charge for theose who lived in
the area prior to Dec. 1952 (a Pioneer) ,
or have relatives already buried at Black Oak.
